Signs Your Spark Plugs Need To Be Replaced
In most vehicles, it is recommended by the manufacturer that you replace your spark plugs every 30,000 miles. However, in some cases, some cars may need theirs replaced sooner and other cars may be able to go longer periods of times between replacement. Learning what the signs are that your spark plugs are nearing the end of their life can help you determine when your spark plugs may need to be replaced. Here are three common signs that your spark plugs need to be replaced.
Your Car Is Slow to Start
Spark plugs create combustion in your engine, ultimately giving it the spark it needs to start up or accelerate. If your spark plugs are nearing the end of their life, they may not be able to quickly produce the spark that is needed to get your car to start. Your car may take a few seconds before turning the key to start. Many people think that their battery may be failing, when it is actually your spark plugs.
Your Car Shakes When You Are Stopped
Another sign that your spark plugs need to be replaced is that your car shakes when you come to a stop. This is often referred to as idling roughly. When you are sitting at a stop sign or a stop light, your vehicle may shake. Many people report that their car shakes so roughly that they feel like their car may actually stall. In addition to feeling the vibrations, you may be able to hear them as well. Instead of your engine purring quietly as it normally does, you may hear a louder rumbling or vibrating noise.
You Start Getting Less Miles Per Gallon
The final common sign that your car may give you if your spark plugs are going bad is that you are starting to get less miles per gallon after filling up. There are many reasons why your car may be getting fewer miles per gallon, but many of these issues slowly develop and worsen. With failing spark plugs, you will notice a sudden decrease in your fuel efficiency.
If you notice these signs, your spark plugs are likely trying to tell you that they need to be replaced. If you wait too long to replace them, your car may not be able to start, your car may stall when it comes to a stop and/or your engine may begin to misfire. Bring your vehicle to a car repair service to have the spark plugs tested and replaced.
